How 10 famous companies got their names?

  • PEPSI

Pepsi- The world's famous soft drink acclaimed globally and consumed by several millions of people, contain pepsin (the digestive enzyme) as a main ingredient. The name pepsi is derived from the term "pepsin". No other soft drink was named after it's ingredients at that time. Hence the uniqueness of the brand.


  • YAHOO

The name "yahoo" , if broken down means "yet another hierarchical Officious Oracle". The name also indicates towards Gulliver's travels written by Jonathon swift, where yahoo was the name of an imaginary species, who were noisy , violent and rude in nature. The name is unique in it's own way.


  • AMAZON
The company owner, the infamous Jeef Bezof , wanted to name his company with the letter "A" so that the name comes at the top of the alphabet list when searched on the internet so he decided to keep it as Amazon because like the south american river, the company too has grown the biggest online store globally.             


  • SKYPE
The original name was kept by the owners as "sky peer to peer" but this name obviously seemed a bit longer and users alike. Hence, the long name was acronymed to skyper. In the last year, the "r" was dropped and the name was finally on skype to make it look extremely cool to the young users.


  • COCA-COLA

 It derived from the coca leaves and the cola nuts used as flavoring. Coca-Cola creator John S. Pemberton changed the "K" of the kola to "C" to make the name look better.

  •  ADIDAS
 It was named from the name of the founder "Adolf (Adi) Dassler".


  • AUDI
Latin translation of the German name "Horch". The founder August Horch left the company after five years, but stillwanted to manufacture cars. Since the original "Horch" company was still there, he called his new company Audi , the Latin form of his last name. In english, it is "hark".

Pierre Omidyar, who had created the Auction Web trading website, had formed a web consulting concern called "Echo Bay Technological Group""Echo Bay" didn't refer to the town in Nevada,"It just sounded cool", Omidyar reportedly said. Echo Bay Mines Limited, a gold mining company, had already taken EchoBay.com, so Omidyar registered what (at that time) he thought was the second best name : eBay.com.

From the Latin word "sonus" meaning sound, and "sonny" a slang word used by Americans to refer to a bright youngster, "since we were sonny boys working in sound and vision", said Akio Morita. The company was founded as Tokyo Tsoshiu Kogyo KK (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation ) in 1946, and changed its name to Sony in 1958. Sony was chosen as it could be pronounced easily in many languages.

This name was coined in 1999 because the key on the blackberry resembled the drupelets on the fruit.
